What to Look for in a LAP-BAND® Surgeon

Making sure you’re in good hands.

Knowing you have a fully qualified and experienced surgeon can make you feel more comfortable about your decision to have LAP-BAND® System surgery. Allergan follows strict surgical selection and training guidelines established by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

Each and every surgeon listed on this site has been LAP-BAND® System certified with the following training:

  • Advanced laparoscopic skills and experience
    • Includes completion of at least 25 bariatric (weight loss) procedures. Or, completion of a comprehensive bariatric surgery course (ASMBS or similar) that covers patient selection, surgery options, perioperative care, and long-term management.
  • Participation in a specialized comprehensive workshop
    • Followed by one-on-one supervision by an experienced LAP-BAND® System surgeon for the first few cases to acquire practical skill in performing the procedure.

Allergan also provides additional training in our LAP-BAND TOTAL CARE® program that surgeons have the opportunity to take.
